A new French pastry shop opened in my neighborhood about a month ago. I’ve been hearing tales of long lines on the weekends, so I’ve been waiting to pop in on a quiet weekend morning. I went around 10:00 am the other day and there were four people in line at the tiny shop.
Lakon Paris Patisserie sells coffee drinks, pastries, and desserts. On the weekends, they sell beautiful croissant creations: strawberry cheesecake, pistachio, chocolate in a cube shape…I was in luck and they had the cubed chocolate croissant on the day that I visited. But it was $9! My initial reaction was, “Oh no….”
But this was quickly overtaken by, “But it looks like really good chocolate. And it’s so cute!” I didn’t know what my partner, Allen, would prefer the most…so I ended up getting four pastries: the cubed chocolate croissant, an almond croissant, a blueberry muffin, and a scone.
I ate the cubed chocolate croissant almost immediately after arriving home. I cut it in half and found chocolate mousse. Oh, mon dieu!

The mousse was light and not too sweet. The chocolate on the top was “the good stuff.” The tiny malted balls were a fun addition. I only ate half in one sitting because it was so rich. Was it worth $9? I think so. Would I order it again? Maybe, after I try all of the other pastries. I enjoyed it immensely, but, in my opinion, the mousse overpowered the croissant a bit.
The berry scone was delicious…and Allen gave me bites of the muffin and almond croissant. Also delicious. Next time, I will try the coffee and possibly a plain old pain au chocolat.
