Late Night Double Feature Picture Show

When I found out that the 48th anniversary tour of the Rocky Horror Picture Show would be stopping in Boston a few weeks before Halloween, I immediately bought tickets. I’ve seen the live screening with a shadow cast a handful of times, and it’s always been a blast. There are props for audience members to throw, and audience members yell witty quips at the screen throughout the screening. (I just learned that this phenom is called “call backs.”)

Before attending a live screening, you want to watch the film at least once, because you miss a lot of the dialogue because of the call backs. The last time I had seen a live show was in 2012, so it had been a while. I excitedly bought a bag of props before the show so I could participate fully: a piece of newspaper, toilet paper, hand clapper, party hat, sponge, two playing cards, and a glow stick.

The icing on the cake was that Patricia Quinn, one of the cast members from the original play and movie, was in attendance. She spoke for about 15 minutes before the screening started, and she was amazing. She’s 79 now and looked the part of an Irish punk goddess with bright red hair and shoes. She told some funny stories about being involved in the play and movie, including having her head screwed into a lamp to keep her head still while she mouthed the words to the movie’s theme song for the opening credits.

There was also a costume contest with 10 people before the show started. It was great to see so many people excited about a 48-year-old cult classic. The shadow cast, Full Body Cast, was fun to watch. They perform a live show of Rocky every weekend at the AMC Boston Common.
