Coffee, New Orleans–Style

Allen and I were recently shopping in our neighborhood on a nice spring day. We had just bought some cookies at a bakery (chocolate chip for him and ginger for me), and we decided that we wanted to have some coffee along with our cookies. There was a Blue Bottle Coffee nearby, which I had been wanting to try.

So off we went. As we were waiting to order, I noticed small cartons in a refrigerated case. They were cartons of iced coffee. I was immediately enthralled for an unknown reason. And even better, it was “New Orleans–style” coffee with chicory in it. We oohed and aahed and each bought a carton.

We sat outside at a small metal table and poured the coffee into paper cups. To our delight, the coffee was delicious! We didn’t know what kind of magic this chicory possessed, but we were hooked. I later read that chicory tastes a lot like coffee, so the flavors complement each other.

Now I have one more reason to visit New Orleans someday…
