Allen and I visited the Scandinavian Cultural Center and Library to celebrate Waffle Day for the first time. I’m more of a French toast gal than a waffle gal, but I enjoy a good Belgian waffle once in a while. I heard about the Scandinavian Center years ago but hadn’t made it there yet. Waffle Day gave us a perfect excuse to check it out. The organization holds events, hosts a weekly Kaffestugan (cafe), and has a Scandinavian library. There is an assisted living home on the premises as well.
We walked into a building that looked a little like a Swiss chalet from the outside, and then found our way to a big open room with a small food counter and Nordic-looking tables and basic chairs, couches, and patterened dining room chairs. The place was mobbed, but Allen was able to find a small table while I waited in line to order the waffles.

I noticed the waffles were very thin, so I also ordered us an almond bun and a cardamom bun. Swedes often put whipped cream and jam on their waffles; because it was Waffle Day, marshmallows, sprinkles, and chocolate chips were also available.
The waffle was nice and we appreciated the homemade whipped cream (not sweet). It was a nice atmosphere with shelves of old books in Scandinavian languages and board games to borrow. We were invited to attend an author talk that was about to take place, but we couldn’t stay.
It was a fun little cultural outing. I’ll keep an eye out for other events there; I read that they bring in portable saunas for people to enjoy a few times per year. Have you been on any cultural outings lately?
