I’m livin’ on a prayer alright.
I hit the halfway mark in the birthday list tonight. I made lime-flavored popcorn.
One of my clearest memories from childhood is going to the popcorn store. The store sold flavored popcorn, or “glazed” popcorn as I have seen it called. We’re not talking flavored as in shaking some spices on the popcorn and calling it a day. We are talking flavored as in drenching the popcorn in a sugary sweet coating that tastes like: grape, lime, bubble gum, or god knows what else.
I’m not sure how long the popcorn store lasted, but it went out of business at some point. Flavored popcorn exited my world until maybe 2009.
My friend and I were in Portland, Maine, a few years ago when we walked by this store. What a joyous day. No trip to Portland is complete without buying bags of popcorn. I love the triple berry.
Anyhoo, I got to thinking. Portland is 2.5 hours away and I only get there once a year. I want flavored popcorn more than once a year. It’s DIY time!
There are variations of the flavored popcorn recipe on the web. They all have the same main ingredients though: sugar, butter, and a packet of Jell-O. My first batch came out fairly well. It is sticky…people on the web mentioned that issue, but like a foolish girl, I paid them no mind.
Next time, baking soda will supposedly temper the stickiness. And hell yes, there will be a next time.
I loved that popcorn store…good village gate memories.
