South County, Rhode Island

For my birthday this year, Allen and I went to Westerly, Rhode Island. I am often drawn to the ocean for my birthday trips, and I’m starting to run out of coastal towns to visit within a two-hour radius of Boston. But I hadn’t been to the southwestern part of Rhode Island yet, so I decided on Westerly.

Misquamicut Beach was our home base. We only had a couple of days to explore, but we packed a lot in. We went to a cool, quirky place called the Fantastic Umbrella Factory to shop and see some free-range chickens and emus.

We also went to the Jonnycake Center, a huge thrift store. We walked around downtown Westerly, which has some nice shops and a beautiful park called Wilcox Park behind the public library.

We saw a few nice sunsets. We raced to the Watch Hill neighborhood one night and caught the last sliver of the sun setting on the water. It was stunning.

The beach situation is…interesting. It reminded me of the Scituate sitch. During the season, there are a lot of “private beaches.” Our motel staff told us it was still “pre-season” so we didn’t need to borrow their beach pass. We had trouble finding the nearest beach, because I think the signage is unassuming on purpose. But we eventually found it and had a nice morning at the beach. It’s really nice to be able to walk to the beach and not deal with parking.

We had some great meals. The Cooked Goose has an amazing breakfast menu, and my birthday dinner at Ella’s Food and Drink was divine.

In conclusion, it was a fantastic trip and we’ll definitely return someday.
