Eat Less Meat and More Plants Tomorrow

During my lunch hour the other day, I was innocently paging through a slideshow about making the 4th of July “greener” when I came across this slide. It provides a link to undercover video footage at one of the country’s biggest pork producers. As I pushed the “play” button on the video clip, I knew I was making a mistake. I cursed out loud in my workstation as I watched pigs being kicked, thrown, and castrated without anesthesia. Their squeals of pain chilled my bones.

I’m no stranger to farm animal abuse…I’ve watched horrific scenes in food documentaries such as Food, Inc. and Forks over Knives. I’ve read stories on the Farm Sanctuary‘s website. Still, every time I read about it, it’s as if I am reading it for the first time.

I eat less and less meat each year. As Michael Pollan says in his book In Defense of  Food, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

Not to rain on your parade…but think about the meat you buy and eat tomorrow, and every other day. Thank you and have a safe, happy, and green 4th of July!
