Union!

I began my #45 birthday list by watching the film Norma Rae. It is based on the true story of a Southern woman who spearheads a unionization effort at the textile mill where she and her family work.

I was excited to watch it because I helped unionize my coworkers and was involved in the contract negotiations with management. Suffice it to say that it was a very, very interesting and eye-opening experience.

Sally Field plays the role of Norma Rae, and I thought she was wonderful. I forgot I was watching Sally Field. She was Norma Rae. (The real-life Crystal Lee Sutton.) Even though I haven’t worked in a factory, it seemed to me to be a true depiction of factory life without unionization and the obstacles that workers face as they try to unionize. Both Norma Rae and Crystal were fired for their work to unionize their colleagues.

Any union member or supporter will greatly appreciate this film.

  1. I enjoyed this write up about unions because I was a union member in a school district in NYS. We worked with ADULT students and were not compensated as teachers working with students under the age of 18. All of our teachers and counselors had Master’s degrees. So In my last years before retirement I was on the negotiating commitment!
