A few days ago, we arrived at Long Hill in Beverly, MA, approximately 20 minutes before the property was closing for a wedding. Blast!
Long Hill is a public garden run by the Trustees of Reservations. It was owned by an author and editor of the Atlantic Monthly, Ellery Sedgwick, and his two wives, Mabel and Marjorie. Even though we only had 20 minutes to explore part of one trail, I could feel some sort of magic in the air. We meandered down a somewhat treacherous path that was cut out of a hill’s slope. The area was so lush that I felt transported.
An added bonus was loads of Halloween decor, as a special “Halloween on the Hill” event was to take place that very evening. There were hay bales, pumpkins, gourds, mums, witches…a feast for fans of fall and Halloween.
Unfortunately, Long Hill is not around the corner, so I’m not sure when we’ll be back. Next time, I’ll call ahead to make sure that no private events are scheduled, so we can spend as much time as we want exploring the grounds.
Wishing you a delightful fall, friends.
